From what I've read, this really isn't that big of an issue. The database is just a list (that's locally stored) of places that you've been to. If it was uploaded to Apple, I would definitely be concerned but if it's a local file, then what's the fuss?
It exists. There's no reason for it to exist. You can't disable it. And there are HUGE privacy implications should the file be accessed without your permission - by thieves, stalkers (or worse), advertisers, police, etc. - none of whom can access your cell company's location records, except authorities, and even then only by subpoena. Which means a judge has to agree that there's a good reason for them to need it.

Where is this "extreme left" of which you speak? The furthest left we have in government is probably Dennis Kucinich, who is really barely left of center, AFAICT. The problem is that we have people who think compromise means " Just do what we want any nobody gets hurt." rollercoasters belong in the funpark, not the capitol.

That 5 billion was supposed to be the total government debt, not just the debt for the current year. I just never got around to using it in my example.
EDIT: You can also say that we don't have an extreme right since no right congressman is proposing total anarchy or privatization of the police departments. It's all relative to the country we are in. I am aware that there are further left people in other countries. There are also countries that allow the cutting off of hands for small crimes. Would we allow an idea like that in this country? I don't think so.

I voted positive.. It's only good for us that there are multiple modern, solid, successful handheld OS around. I hope Win Mobile gets some share too.
Quite funny seeing Symbian dying by the side of the road too, I've never liked it much despite loving some of Nokia's hardware choices.
I prefer my Apple-land devices but I can see why some people don't. :) Bring on the competition. I like Apple's slow but steady and generally well implemented feature roll-outs too.. Agree about the notification system though, it needs replacing.

Thanks MR for generating discussion around a pretty lame topic. That said, Id rather have Toyota spending their extra time perfecting that little acceleration/braking glitch that affected a "couple" of their cars, than making a lame a$$ Scion theme for Cydia.

If Apple does not allow that, I might as well go out and buy the DVD or USB for such a purpose.
If Apple does not allow that, then a failed hard drive would mean that the only way to install your legal copy of OS X would be to buy a second copy of OS X. Hopefully they see the flaws and will do something about it.

With regards to the actual topic, Apple would not win in court, but Samsung will settle for a not insubstantial sum. It really is that simple.
Samsung can easily do that. Pay Apple and then get their money back by raising the prices on RAM and flash memory (because their cost base grew as a result of patent litigation)

I said sub-$1000. $999 is sub-$1000. ;) The iMac started out at $1300, and dropped to $800 at one point. Stuff it getting cheaper. I don't know when a cheaper laptop will be coming out, but I'll bet one is.

Given that I have 13 months on my contract remaining, I'd say the chances of Apple releasing a cell phone next month are incredibly hot. I wonder what the early cancellation fee is.... Hmmm.

I don't think that a camera in a Mac display is a big issue for companies, and here's why:
1. I work for a company that cares about security. We don't allow cameras in the building, with the recent exception of cell phones with cameras. The reason for the exception is because it is becoming difficult to get a cell phone without a camera. And really, these companies are almost always PC-based, so are they really big ACD purchasers?
2. In the lab, cell phones with cameras are still off limits. However, lab computers are pretty locked down with regards to software, and since you need software to use the camera, I think there are multiple easy solutions to this problem (e.g., restrict software installations, or maybe disable the camera at an OS level). It's possible that someone could bring in a laptop and do some funny business, but even that would have to be a company computer, or the user would be in serious trouble. And in the case of it being a company computer, it suffers all of the same issues of a lab equipped with non-camera-mounted monitors (or removable media for that matter).

Cool, thanks for the info, i didnt know about this product. Although reading the feature list it sounds more like a internet security and windows virus detector then a mac AV. But maybe i'm wrong.
Anyone who has tested it and is willing to share the experience?
(maybe i take a snapshot of my OSX and give the demo a try, dont want to risk it :) )

Funny to see you are basing a $4000 computer purchase on a $79 piece of crap-KEA furniture - LOL.

And you can get a pretty sweet Mac Pro for around $2K. All I'd need for the next few years, anyhow.
Also, shrinking the Mac Pro would cut down on the space it takes to store inventory at Apple stores, and reduce shipping costs by slashing both the weight and volume of the product. It would make the product more price competitive and/or more profitable.

Yup. Ever since our government and our dollars allow larger companies to strong arm smaller businesses to manufacture their products cheaper overseas, thereby shutting down American plants and businesses, we shot ourselves in the collective foot.
Google Walmart and Rubbermaid. The growing trend in overseas production was kicked in high gear when Walmart threatened Rubbermaid that they would pull their product if they didn't shut down their American businesses to manufacture their products in cheaper bulk in China. Rubbermaid refused as they employed thousands of Americans, and not just in production plants but in marketing, etc. In 1994 Walmart pulled all Rubbermaid products from their shelves, Rubbermaid lost 60%+ of their business, almost went bankrupt, was bought by another company, shut down their plants, and acquiesced to Walmart. Walmart then went into the towns where Rubbermaid once employed so many and built Walmarts. Now ex-Rubbermaid employees who had pensions, 401k's and 100K+ salaries are forced to shell out cheap Chinese goods at minimum wage.

Now, with a failed education system, 60%+ of our money going to our military to obtain natural resources and less money to become an educated and healthy global member, we are simply "meat with eyes", consuming everything that is marketed our way, spending our money through Goldman Sachs and producing almost NOTHING.

Unfortunately, I'm pulled back into thinking, "What could Apple do with phones that hasn't already been done." Small, light, photos, video, internet, music, games, personal organization? Most of this is pretty well covered with the current offerings. So what is going to be the selling point here? Is it going to be expensive or affordable? Is it going to be full-featured or bare bones?
Very good questions.
- Apple could release a stylish simple phone with a simple interface, and the capability of an iPod shuffle built in. There would really be nothing special about such a phone - at most they might give it 3G data connections so someone with a MacBook could use it to get on the net.
- They could certainly be the first provider to make a phone that can ONLY be used handsfree (via the headphones).
- They could leverage their airport base stations to release a VoIP phone that works at home, work, and wireless hotspots.
- The obvious untapped area is integration of VoIP, 3G, & video - but all the big companies are looking at that. The other thing that most mobile companies are having trouble with is the killer app - so many phones have data connectivity, and people just don't know what to do with it. If Apple can make a compelling product there the phone companies will want to sell it.
ps. Apple might choose to make a phone with no music capability... just to delineate the product. That gives people something to understand... and then they can release the combo products.
